Insert both trays and begin in the upper level with the right amount of substrate for early growth. Seeds and small clones usually start in Level 1, while larger seedlings or bigger clones can begin with more space in Level 2. You can use one substrate throughout or build the pot in stages with different mixes for start, veg, and finish.
As the root zone develops, check the indicator gap. Once roots become clearly visible and begin filling the gap, remove the upper tray to open the next level. Later, remove the lower tray to unlock the full container volume. It works like transplanting, only faster, cleaner, and without disturbing the plant.
By the final stage, the plant can use the entire container volume in the same pot it started in. The trays do more than control root expansion — they also retain excess water during watering and serve as saucers when the full volume is in use.
